Solving the Mystery of Execution - Part 2

Below is the second part of our Execution Checklist. This one addresses Organizational Culture, Strategies and People and their impact on a company's success in executing their strategic plan.

Rate your company on a scale of 1 to 7:

1 = not at all
4 = average performance
7 = exceptional performance

Organizational Culture - How is business done around here? What are your organization's personality, beliefs and values

We stay focused on achieving our objectives and don't jump to the next idea before we realize the first.

We understand our culture's strengths and weaknesses as they influence our ability to execute our strategies.

Strategies - How will we build this business? What will make this business successful over time?

Our objectives are realistic.

Our objectives are measurable.

Accountability for achievement of the objectives is clearly assigned.

Our objectives are balanced between financial, customer, process and growth and learning.

Everyone understands the objectives and their role in achieving them
7.
Our objectives will help us reach our vision.

People - Do we have the right people and do they have the right skills?  
1.
We have the right people on board.
2.
Our people have the skills they need to execute their duties.
3.
Our people are doing the right things.
4.
Our people understand the importance of their contributions.
5.
Our people are held accountable for achieving their goals and objectives.
6.
Our people are held accountable for progress on their action plans.

Add up your scores for all three categories. You can score between 0 and 119.

If you scored over 80, you are above average to excellent, there is a high probability that your strategies will be successfully executed. You have a very good start on your road to success.

If you scored between 41 and 80, you have an average shot at success. Look at the individual questions to see which areas could be improved. Consider each area carefully because "average" is not usually enough for success.

If you scored below 40, you definitely will have trouble with any execution.
If culture is the problem area, consider revising your strategies so they can succeed in your current culture. If your strategies are not going to make your vision a reality, then they will need to be revised. And finally, as Jim Collins points out in his book in "Good to Great" having the right people on the bus is critical to successful execution of any strategic plan.
