Individual Growth: Master Your Talents to Find Fulfillment

"It's obvious the world does chase after high quality anything:character, goods, services, craftsmanship. The marketplace actively courts those few, rare souls who master themselvesand consequently their vocations."

- Marsha Senetar
Do What You Love, The Money will Follow

Do you want to be one of those "rare souls who master themselves?" Most of us do. We want to make a difference in the world, pursuing worthy goals with passion and dedication. Each of us has our own unique gifts that only we bring to bear. By using them to their full capacity we can become masters - people of "high quality" who are admired and sought by others.

How do you begin to master yourself? The first step is to take stock of your natural abilities. Find out what you love to do, what you do really well. Once you recognize your gifts, there are layers of potential to be realized. Next, consider your experience, knowledge and education. Make sure each is developed enough to be truly effective in your life and work.

In The Fifth Discipline, Peter Senge wrote, "People with a high level of personal mastery are able to consistently realize the results that matter most deeply to them - in effect, they approach their life as an artist would approach a work of art. They do that by becoming committed to their own life long learning."

Becoming a life-long learner is the critical next step in mastering yourself. It is important to keep expanding your skills and knowledge in order to be prepared when opportunity knocks. Through learning we re-create ourselves, gaining new abilities and ideas as we encounter new ways to perceive the world and our place in it. There is within us a deep hunger to continually grow and improve. We must nurture that hunger.

Each of us is accountable for our own development, but we can all benefit from guidance and support. We must seek feedback, listen without being defensive, and carefully choose whether to accept or reject advice. Each person you meet and every experience you have offers an opportunity to learn. Eleanor Roosevelt said, "Nothing you learn, however wide of the mark it may appear at the time, however trivial, is ever wasted."

Self-masters realize that it is always possible to have a positive impact. Anita Roddick wrote, "If you think you're too small to make a difference, you haven't been in bed with a mosquito." It is up to each of us to recognize, nurture and use our gifts, both in our careers and in our lives. By doing so, we help create companies that earn the admiration and loyalty of employees and clients alike.
