Become A Truly Global Company

"Companies fail when they put a global strategy and structure in place, but don't develop global people who can make the strategy work."

Mary Beth Lamb
Co-author, "Do's and Taboos Around the World for Women in Business"

According to J. Stewart Black and Hal B. Gregersen of The Harvard Business Review, "in today's economy, having a workforce that is fluent in the ways of the world isn't a luxury." As the world gets smaller and smaller, and our markets expand to other parts of the world, it has become increasingly important that we know how to work with people of different cultures.

Are you, or do you want to be, doing business in the international marketplace? Are you dealing with:

  • International mergers and acquisitions?

  • Staffing issues for overseas companies and divisions?

  • Providing home office support for people operating in other countries?

  • Staffing multicultural teams to drive results?

  • Customers, alliance partners and employees in an international market?

How effective do you want to be in the world market? Do you want to be a truly effective global company or just another American company trying to do business in other countries in the American way?

Effective global organizations understand that their people - both here and abroad - need to:

  • Demonstrate cross-cultural sensitivity

  • Understand that each culture has values different from ours, but of equal validity

  • Have the tools to function cross-culturally, so that they can optimize business opportunities around the world.

Employees must first be aware of the differences between cultures. Once they have this awareness, they are ready to learn the critical skills and tools to navigate cultural differences and achieve peak performance around the world.

Employees who work regularly with a particular country or region will benefit from knowing practical insights about cultural business processes and protocol for those regions of the world. Global teams will need to develop processes and use special skills that will help them to work together productively.

Employees who transfer overseas will benefit from learning, prior to their departure, how to be successful in their new host country. They also require support as they are repatriated. Many people will leave their companies when they get to their home country. Many times this is due to trouble reacclimating to "home." Coping skills and practical techniques to reintegrate into their home culture help make the transition back smoother.
